When we were contemplating moving to Texas, one of our “pros” for the move was that we could head out west to the Big Bend region of the state whenever we wanted. So this Fourth of July we found ourselves delightfully with no plans and decided on an impromptu trip to Big Bend for a perfect day in West Texas.
The Holland Hotel in Alpine allows pets, and Daisy loved her mini vacation.
We spend our days at our favorite haunts, including the beautiful garden at the Gage Hotel in Marathon, TX. It’s a true oasis in the desert.
Then we headed south toward the Rio Grande and made our way to Terlingua for breakfast at La Posada Miligro. This far south, it really does feel as though you’re in another world.
And then into beautiful Big Bend National Park.
Daisy swam in the Rio Grande at the Santa Elena Canyon (before we found out this is not exactly allowed), and we took the road less traveled. Which unfortunately did not fare well for our tires. But at least the view and company were exceptional.
It rarely rains in this part of the world and we loved that we were in the area during a rain storm. And that it was in the 70s and 80s the entire time instead of the standard 100s. It gave the mountains a moody vibe and we couldn’t help but snap some pictures.
Then it was back to Marathon for dinner. Nothing ends a perfect Texas day like some delicious brisket!
